How to reduce many InDesign PDF errors in just a few steps.

I’m mentioning two different pages that helped me solve a lot of problems when converting InDesign files that had been converted to PDF. PAC2021[1]It should be noted that the new version requires registration, although I’m not quite sure why. The old PAC 3 version does not. (the PDF accessibility checker, currently Windows only) highlights many errors that Adobe Acrobat does not. Some of my files that I had already remediated in Acrobat still came up with 400+ errors in PAC2021. Here’s what to do:

For both of these corrections, you will want to have your preflight menu readily available. I added it to the list of tools in my right-hand menu bar. Go to Tools in the top menu, and select “Add” for Print Production. I also added PDF standards, but it’s not strictly necessary for these two fixes.

1. If you keep getting the “Path Object Not Tagged” error, go here: https://carneydevelopit.wordpress.com/2021/03/30/path-object-not-tagged-pdf-problems/

The full summary is there, but the problem is that Acrobat doesn’t correctly artifact tables created in InDesign, so it things every single row and column stroke is problematic.

2. To set the PDF/UA identifier, go here: https://accessiblewebsiteservices.com/accessible-pdfs-how-to-add-a-pdf-ua-identifier/

That site will show you how to fix that error. Again, you’ll need to go into the Preflight menu to make the change.

Happy remediating! (Post updated May 12 to show the new version of the PDF accessibility checker.)
